I will say this from the outset I Love Hip-Hop.
It encompasses everything from how i talk to my political views, with that being said i feel obliged to criticize it.
We as a culture have allowed outsiders to infiltrate and dictate what is produced in essence we have been pimped. The fact that simple party rhymes dominate the radio is telling us we don't own hip-hop anymore
But this can change when rappers aren't scared to rap about what they want to rap about, producers make beats they want, ppl dress how they want, and have their own individual views.
So with that who's going to have the balls to be genuinely unique.

I agree with you fully to an extent. Hip-Hop has become more than just a cultural thing, it's something people aspire to. The talent of rapping and producing doesn't just come naturally like if someone was born into playing violin because their parents made them. It something that develops when a person and their buddies aspire to become rappers or producers and the only way you know you're getting good at it is if people respond to it well.
ReplyDeleteThe point I'm trying to make is that rappers and producers are only motivated to continue becoming better if their audiences respond well to it. So shame on the people who sell-out and start making the mainstream party hits, but bigger shame on the audience who have dumbed down and identify better with the ignorance being spewed on the radio. Listeners have become more receptive to simplistic hip-hop without any musical or intellectual challenges and artists have become complacent with making simplistic music because that's what people would rather hear. It works better for them so why take the difficult route in making real music when it's making them more money?
exactly
ReplyDeletei am tempted to say its the big labels that have killed the art of rhyming but its actually artists who are scared to make what they want.
jay electronica (my favorite artist at the time) said "when you walk like this and talk like this the radio station will never put a nigga on" this is true and the fact that we live in a society where C.R.E.A.M true artists never get exposure and phonys will always make "music"
